Base64 Encoder & Decoder
Convert text to Base64 and back, with correct handling of Unicode and an optional URL-safe alphabet.
How it works
Base64 represents binary data using 64 printable ASCII characters. Plain btoa() in JavaScript fails on non-Latin characters, so this tool encodes text as UTF-8 first. The URL-safe variant replaces + and / with - and _ and drops the = padding.
Base64 is an encoding, not encryption. Anyone can decode it, so never use it to protect secrets.
Frequently asked questions
Is Base64 encryption?
No. It is a reversible encoding that anyone can decode. It does not protect data.
Why does Base64 end with equals signs?
The = characters pad the output to a multiple of four characters.
What is URL-safe Base64?
A variant using - and _ instead of + and /, safe for URLs and filenames. It is used in JWTs.
