Tools › Chmod permissions › chmod 755
chmod 755 explained (rwxr-xr-x)
chmod 755 sets the permissions to rwxr-xr-x.
- Owner: read, write, execute
- Group: read, execute
- Others: read, execute
When to use it
The standard for directories, scripts and executables you want others to run but not edit.
Security note
Others can read the contents, so avoid it for anything private.
Tip: applying it to files and directories separately
Directories need the execute bit to be entered, files usually do not. Set them separately: find dir -type d -exec chmod 755 {} + and find dir -type f -exec chmod 644 {} +.
