chmod 775 explained (rwxrwxr-x)
chmod 775 sets the permissions to rwxrwxr-x.
- Owner: read, write, execute
- Group: read, write, execute
- Others: read, execute
When to use it
Shared project directories where a group of users all need to write.
Security note
Everyone else can still read and enter the directory. Combine it with a shared group and the setgid bit (chmod g+s) so new files keep the group.
Tip: applying it to files and directories separately
Directories need the execute bit to be entered, files usually do not. Set them separately: find dir -type d -exec chmod 755 {} + and find dir -type f -exec chmod 644 {} +.
