Data Size Converter (KB, MB, GB, KiB, MiB, GiB)
Enter a size and unit to see it in every decimal and binary unit. Find out why your 1 TB drive shows 931 GB.
How it works
Two systems coexist. Decimal (SI) units use powers of 1000: 1 KB = 1,000 bytes, 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. Storage vendors and network speeds use these. Binary (IEC) units use powers of 1024: 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes, 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes. Operating systems often show binary sizes but label them GB, which is why a 1 TB drive appears as about 931 GB (really GiB).
Frequently asked questions
Why does my 1 TB drive show as 931 GB?
The drive has 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, and your OS divides by 1024 cubed three times, giving about 931 GiB.
What is the difference between MB and MiB?
MB is 1,000,000 bytes; MiB is 1,048,576 bytes (1024 x 1024).
How many MB in a GB?
1,000 MB in a GB (decimal), or 1,024 MiB in a GiB (binary).
