SHA Hash Generator
Type or paste text to get its SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 hashes. Nothing leaves your browser.
How it works
A cryptographic hash turns any input into a fixed-length fingerprint. The same input always gives the same hash, and even a one-character change produces a completely different result. Hashes are computed with the browser's built-in Web Crypto API over the UTF-8 bytes of your text.
SHA-256 and SHA-512 are suitable for integrity checks and signatures. SHA-1 is broken for security purposes and should only be used for legacy compatibility. Never use a plain hash to store passwords; use a slow password hash such as bcrypt, scrypt or Argon2.
Frequently asked questions
Why is MD5 not included?
The browser's Web Crypto API does not provide MD5 because it is cryptographically broken.
Can a hash be reversed?
Not directly, but weak or common inputs can be found by guessing, which is why passwords need salted, slow hashing.
Why does my hash differ from another tool's?
Check for trailing newlines or different text encodings. This tool hashes the exact text you enter, encoded as UTF-8.
