How it works

Ports 0-1023 are "well-known" ports assigned by IANA to core services. Ports 1024-49151 are registered, and 49152-65535 are dynamic ports used for temporary outgoing connections. A service can run on any port, so this list shows the defaults.

When exposing a server, open only the ports you need and prefer encrypted variants (SSH over Telnet, HTTPS over HTTP, IMAPS over IMAP).

Frequently asked questions

What port does SSH use?

TCP port 22 by default.

What is the difference between TCP and UDP ports?

They are separate port spaces. TCP is connection-oriented and reliable; UDP is connectionless and used by DNS, NTP, DHCP and VPNs such as WireGuard.

Should I change the default SSH port?

It reduces log noise from automated scans but is not real security. Key-only authentication and a firewall matter far more.
